The New York Bomb Plot

The 2 May 2010 attempted detonation of a car bomb in New York City, United States, should be considered as another near miss incident on the United States' terror radar. Initial reports have indicated that the Sports Utility Vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, was filled with three propane tanks, fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, according to officials. NY Police Commissioner Ray Kelly added that 100 pounds of fertilizer were also found in a rifle cabinet; however the fertilizer was not volatile enough to explode.

The last time a fertilizer based VBIED (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device) was used in the United States, was during the Oklahoma City bombing which targeted the Federal Building in the city. The 1993 World Trade Center Bombing in New York also involved the primary use of fertilizer based explosive devices, with hydrogen gas tanks for secondary explosions.

A brief preliminary analysis of the information at hand clearly indicates a potential terror attack, despite the supposed “rudimentary” nature of the bomb. The only factor which came into play which would meant the difference between a serious incident and a lower intensity incident, was that the bomb malfunctioned. Eyewitness accounts state the car was starting to billow smoke, and while the initial trigger mechanism began, it soon fizzled out. It can be speculated that the “pop-pop-pop” sounds heard by the eyewitness were the small over the counter fireworks which were detonated as a result of the initial flames.

Special mention of Duane Jackson is needed, for by observing and reporting the suspicious vehicle, he allowed the authorities to move in immediately. It is another reminder on how everyday civilians can play a pivotal role. It is important to highlight the case of Jackson and others like him in Public Service Announcements, as key efforts to counter-terrorist actions.

London Car Bomb Plots: The Similarities

The bomb plot is eerily similar to the failed car bombing attempts at London in 2007. The incidents in June 2007, involved two cars filled with petrol, gas cylinders and nails. The cars did not suffer from a malfunction, but were detected and the bombs disabled. As in the New York incident, the vital role of the alert public helped avert a major catastrophe. In the first incident, an ambulance rushing towards a night club to tend to a patron noticed a suspiciously parked car near the club, which was billowing smoke. Authorities were called in and they immediately cordoned off the area and prevented the device from detonating.

In the second incident, the car which was illegally parked was towed away, and the staff at the car park, suspicious of the strong smell of petrol from the car, combined with knowledge that a car bomb had been detected earlier, informed the police who swiftly moved in to investigate and disable the bomb. Reports have indicated that the London car bombs were to be detonated by mobile phones. It would be interesting to learn more about the trigger mechanism for the New York bomb plots.

Why New York City?

The United States remains a prized target destination for terrorist plots. Within the U.S., New York has been high on the terror radar for a number of years. New York City offers the quintessential American identity, from its financial nerve centers, multi-culturalism, sports centers such as the world’s most famous arena- Madison Square Garden and home to the symbol of American liberty- The statue of Liberty. Furthermore, the city is also home to the United Nations headquarters, which makes it an attractive location for international media outlets, and therefore even more viable to terrorist groups intending to take advantage of the international coverage an attack on New York offers. In totality, New York offers what is described in counter-terrorism parlance as a plethora of “Iconic Targets” which would be high on the terrorist radar scene.

In recent years, the terror threat against New York has been significantly higher. The city has been on a high state of alert since the September 11 attacks, and a number of foiled incidents since then have furthered fears of a successful attack by terrorists. On 30 April 2010, Wesam El-Hanafi and Sabirhan Hasanoff, both U.S. citizens, were indicted for allegedly conspiring to provide computer advice and assistance, services and currency to al Qaeda. They were both residents of New York.

Interestingly, responding to a query over a possible link to an imminent terror attack, NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly acknowledged that the two were undertaking certain tasks and chores for al-Qaeda while in New York, but downplayed any terror threat.

New York’s subway system has been repeatedly focused upon in briefings by counter-terrorism agencies. Zarein Ahmedzay, Adis Medunjanin and Najibullah Zazi were indicted by the US Justice Department on charges to “conduct coordinated suicide bombings” against the New York’s subway system in September 2009. The most serious of terror plots, targeted against the United States at the time. Ahmedzay pleaded guilty in April 2010. Threats against the subway system were also raised in September 2008, and November 2008. Furthermore, New York City in 2009 has also charged terror suspects with plotting to bomb two synagogues in Bronx and to use antiaircraft missiles to shoot down planes at a military base in Newburgh, N.Y., 60 miles north of New York City.

The most significant of terror trials in the United States is potentially to be hosted in New York. The trial of the mastermind of the September 11 attacks- Khaled Shaikh Mohammad is scheduled to take place in a court room in downtown Manhattan. The location of the trial has been opposed to by many senior administration officials owing to security considerations surrounding such a trial. The expected trial has even led to an audio taped message from Osama Bin Laden that a death sentence to Mohammad would lead to renewed threats against Americans, and the execution of Americans captured by the group.

Who is responsible for the latest terror attempt?

It is very early to conclusively name prime suspects in the plot. The day after the incident, a Pakistani-American Faisal Shahzad was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, while boarding a flight to Dubai. It is suspected that he spent time in Waziristan region of Pakistan, which is a known hotbed of extremism, including the base of operations of the Tehreek I Taliban. Immediate connections between him and the bombing plot are sketchy. As this remains a crucial time juncture, only speculations as to the perpetuators can be provided.

The Pakistan based Tehreek-i-Taliban (TTP) led by Hakimullah Mehsud had taken responsibility for the car bomb, while then distancing itself from the claim. The group is known to be opportunistic in its claims, and does not necessarily have the capabilities to launch attacks beyond its operating zone. The TTP has had some credible successes against American interests in the region including the Khost suicide bombing which killed a number of CIA officials in Afghanistan. The last attack on American soil claimed by the TTP was the April 2009 shooting in a U.S. immigration center in New York, which has since been dismissed by investigators. The TTP had claimed the New York bomb plot as revenge for the deaths of senior Al-Qaeda functionaries in Iraq. Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri. Masri took over the reigns of Al-Qaeda in Iraq after the death of Abu Musab Zarqawi was killed a little over a week ago by American forces in Tikrit. His death was seen as a major victory by the Iraqi and American governments, with a special press briefing being called for the occasion.

Alternatively, the similarities between the London car bombs and the New York bomb plot lend credence to speculation that Al-Qaeda affiliated groups may have been behind the attack. One of the perpetuators of the London bombing plot, Bilal Abdulla (the co-passenger in the Glasgow airport attack), had purportedly met senior Iraq based Al-Qaeda leaders. A letter found in his laptop was a dedication to Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza al-Muhajir.

The last major terrorist attack both successful and foiled against American interests were traced back to Imam Anwar al-Awlaki, a Yemen based American scholar, with leadership in the Al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula (AQAP). In addition to the shooting incident involving Major Hasan Nidal, another shooting outside an Arkansas military recruitment center, is believed to have linkages to AQAP. In addition, the failed Detroit airplane bombing plot has further indicated the resourcefulness of AQAP. However, it might also be entirely plausible that Al-Qaeda central may have been behind the plot, re-activating sleeper cells long believed to be in the United States. As is well documented, Al-Qaeda is known to revisit its targets, including the second attempt at the World Trade Center and repeated attempts to blow up airplanes since. New York remains a iconic target for terrorists, and particularly so for Al-Qaeda.

Rumors suggest that the bomb plot may have been an intended message for Media mogul Viacom, whose offices are located in the vicinity. Viacom owns Comedy Central; a cable channel hosts the controversial animated show “South Park”. South Park has been in the news recently for their attempts at depicting the Prophet Mohammad in their satirical series, much to the chagrin of the network which has repeatedly censored the image since the Danish cartoon controversy. An online Muslim group had even posted a morbid picture of Theo Van Gough, a Dutch filmmaker who was murdered for his critical portrayal of Islam, as a warning to the creators of “South Park”.

Domestic radicalized groups or individuals as reflected in the case of Timothy McVeigh or the Unabomber could also have been possible. Domestic Islamic terror groups are an area for concern for the United States. A number of US citizens have been radicalized over the internet, and have expressed their willingness to contribute to Jihadi activities within the United States. Cases such as Colleen LaRose, now known more popularly through her online moniker “Jihad Jane”, are an indication of how domestic radicalization has spread its tentacles in the United States. LaRose has been indicted on charges of planning to travel to Sweden to kill Lars Vilks, a Swedish artist who depicted Prophet Mohammad in the body of a dog. However, further investigations into the nature of the explosive device and the true ownership of the vehicle (the car carried false number plates), would help shed light on the perpetuators.

Conclusion

As mentioned New York remains a major target for terrorist groups of all types. It would be prudent for authorities to expeditiously carry out through investigations, and unravel any other plots, if any. As it is entirely early into investigations into the attacks, the media too should play a responsible role in the coverage of the plot, without sensationalizing the story, thereby giving the terrorists a victory of sorts. Investigators should be allowed to do their jobs, and it is the responsibility of the media and citizens to contribute to their efforts with responsible behavior, not contributing to panic and chaos. The suspected role of Shahzad Faisal and his purported links to extremist groups would be further investigated, and whether his stay in the US was linked to this plot or any others.

On the other hand, the good work done by Mr. Duane Jackson should be highlighted. Johnson’s timely intervention reflects the key importance of civil support in countering the nefarious designs of terrorists groups. In what can be described as the “golden coordination” of cooperation between the public and law enforcement authorities, which can lead to workable leads in foiling any further attacks. These would frustrate the ambitions of the terrorists, while further empowering citizens in the fight against terrorism. What remains a pivotal edge which authorities have against terrorist groups is the public support, and as leads and information about the perpetuators reaches into the hands of investigators, the further inroads we make in the War on Terror.

The protocols of Zion : The Basic Doctrine

1. Putting aside fine phrases we shall speak of the significance of each thought: by comparisons and deductions we shall throw light upon surrounding facts.

2. What I am about to set forth, then, is our system from the two points of view, that of ourselves and that of the GOYIM [i.e., non-Jews].

3. It must be noted that men with bad instincts are more in number than the good, and therefore the best results in governing them are attained by violence and terrorisation, and not by academic discussions.

Every man aims at power, everyone would like to become a dictator if only he could, and rare indeed are the men who would not be willing to sacrifice the welfare of all for the sake of securing their own welfare.

4. What has restrained the beasts of prey who are called men? What has served for their guidance hitherto?

5. In the beginnings of the structure of society, they were subjected to brutal and blind force; after words - to Law, which is the same force, only disguised. I draw the conclusion that by the law of nature right lies in force.

6. Political freedom is an idea but not a fact. This idea one must know how to apply whenever it appears necessary with this bait of an idea to attract the masses of the people to one's party for the purpose of crushing another who is in authority.

This task is rendered easier of the opponent has himself been infected with the idea of freedom, SO-CALLED LIBERALISM, and, for the sake of an idea, is willing to yield some of his power.

It is precisely here that the triumph of our theory appears; the slackened reins of government are immediately, by the law of life, caught up and gathered together by a new hand, because the blind might of the nation cannot for one single day exist without guidance, and the new authority merely fits into the place of the old already weakened by liberalism.

GOLD

7. In our day the power which has replaced that of the rulers who were liberal is the power of Gold. Time was when Faith ruled. The idea of freedom is impossible of realization because no one knows how to use it with moderation.

It is enough to hand over a people to self-government for a certain length of time for that people to be turned into a disorganized mob. From that moment on we get internecine strife which soon develops into battles between classes, in the midst of which States burn down and their importance is reduced to that of a heap of ashes.

8. Whether a State exhausts itself in its own convulsions, whether its internal discord brings it under the power of external foes - in any case it can be accounted irretrievable lost: IT IS IN OUR POWER.

The despotism of Capital, which is entirely in our hands, reaches out to it a straw that the State, willy-nilly, must take hold of: if not - it goes to the bottom.

9. Should anyone of a liberal mind say that such reflections as the above are immoral, I would put the following questions: If every State has two foes and if in regard to the external foe it is allowed and not considered immoral to use every manner and art of conflict, as for example to keep the enemy in ignorance of plans of attack and defense, to attack him by night or in superior numbers, then in what way can the same means in regard to a worse foe, the destroyer of the structure of society and the commonweal, be called immoral and not permissible?

10. Is it possible for any sound logical mind to hope with any success to guide crowds by the aid of reasonable counsels and arguments, when any objection or contradiction, senseless though it may be, can be made and when such objection may find more favor with the people, whose powers of reasoning are superficial?

Men in masses and the men of the masses, being guided solely by petty passions, paltry beliefs, traditions and sentimental theorems, fall a prey to party dissension, which hinders any kind of agreement even on the basis of a perfectly reasonable argument.

Every resolution of a crowd depends upon a chance or packed majority, which, in its ignorance of political secrets, puts forth some ridiculous resolution that lays in the administration a seed of anarchy.

11. The political has nothing in common with the moral. The ruler who is governed by the moral is not a skilled politician, and is therefore unstable on his throne. He who wishes to rule must have recourse both to cunning and to make-believe.

Great national qualities, like frankness and honesty, are vices in politics, for they bring down rulers from their thrones more effectively and more certainly than the most powerful enemy. Such qualities must be the attributes of the kingdoms of the GOYIM, but we must in no wise be guided by them.

MIGHT IS RIGHT

12. Our right lies in force. The word "right" is an abstract thought and proved by nothing. The word means no more than: Give me what I want in order that thereby I may have a proof that I am stronger than you.

13. Where does right begin? Where does it end?

14. In any State in which there is a bad organization of authority, an impersonality of laws and of the rulers who have lost their personality amid the flood of rights ever multiplying out of liberalism, I find a new right - to attack by the right of the strong, and to scatter to the winds all existing forces of order and regulation, to reconstruct all institutions and to become the sovereign lord of those who have left to us the rights of their power by laying them down voluntarily in their liberalism.

15. Our power in the present tottering condition of all forms of power will be more invincible than any other, because it will remain invisible until the moment when it has gained such strength that no cunning can any longer undermine it.

16. Out of the temporary evil we are now compelled to commit will emerge the good of an unshakable rule, which will restore the regular course of the machinery of the national life, brought to naught by liberalism.

The result justifies the means. Let us, however, in our plans, direct our attention not so much to what is good and moral as to what is necessary and useful.

17. Before us is a plan in which is laid down strategically the line from which we cannot deviate without running the risk of seeing the labor of many centuries brought to naught.

18. In order to elaborate satisfactory forms of action it is necessary to have regard to the rascality, the slackness, the instability of the mob, its lack of capacity to understand and respect the conditions of its own life, or its own welfare.

It must be understood that the might of a mob is blind, senseless and unreasoning force ever at the mercy of a suggestion from any side.

The blind cannot lead the blind without bringing them into the abyss; consequently, members of the mob, upstarts from the people even though they should be as a genius for wisdom, yet having no understanding of the political, cannot come forward as leaders of the mob without bringing the whole nation to ruin.

19. Only one trained from childhood for independent rule can have understanding of the words that can be made up of the political alphabet.

20. A people left to itself, i.e., to upstarts from its midst, brings itself to ruin by party dissensions excited by the pursuit of power and honors and the disorders arising therefrom. Is it possible for the masses of the people calmly and without petty jealousies to form judgment, to deal with the affairs of the country, which cannot be mixed up with personal interest?

Can they defend themselves from an external foe? It is unthinkable; for a plan broken up into as many parts as there are heads in the mob, loses all homogeneity, and thereby becomes unintelligible and impossible of execution.

WE ARE DESPOTS

21. It is only with a despotic ruler that plans can be elaborated extensively and clearly in such a way as to distribute the whole properly among the several parts of the machinery of the State: from this the conclusion is inevitable that a satisfactory form of government for any country is one that concentrates in the hands of one responsible person.

Without an absolute despotism there can be no existence for civilization which is carried on not by the masses but by their guide, whosoever that person may be. The mob is savage, and displays its savagery at every opportunity.

The moment the mob seizes freedom in its hands it quickly turns to anarchy, which in itself is the highest degree of savagery.

22. Behold the alcoholic animals, bemused with drink, the right to an immoderate use of which comes along with freedom. It is not for us and ours to walk that road.

The peoples of the GOYIM are bemused with alcoholic liquors; their youth has grown stupid on classicism and from early immorality, into which it has been inducted by our special agents - by tutors, lackeys, governesses in the houses of the wealthy, by clerks and others, by our women in the places of dissipation frequented by the GOYIM.

In the number of these last I count also the so-called "society ladies," voluntary followers of the others in corruption and luxury.

23. Our countersign is - Force and Make-believe. Only force conquers in political affairs, especially if it be concealed in the talents essential to statesmen.

Violence must be the principle, and cunning and make-believe the rule for governments which do not want to lay down their crowns at the feet of agents of some new power. This evil is the one and only means to attain the end, the good. Therefore we must not stop at bribery, deceit and treachery when they should serve towards the attainment of our end.

In politics one must know how to seize the property of others without hesitation if by it we secure submission and sovereignty.

24. Our State, marching along the path of peaceful conquest, has the right to replace the horrors of war by less noticeable and more satisfactory sentences of death, necessary to maintain the terror which tends to produce blind submission.

Just but merciless severity is the greatest factor of strength in the State: not only for the sake of gain but also in the name of duty, for the sake of victory, we must keep to the programme of violence and make-believe.

The doctrine of squaring accounts is precisely as strong as the means of which it makes use. Therefore it is not so much by the means themselves as by the doctrine of severity that we shall triumph and bring all governments into subjection to our super-government. It is enough for them to know that we are too merciless for all disobedience to cease.

WE SHALL END LIBERTY

25. Far back in ancient times we were the first to cry among the masses of the people the words "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity," words many times repeated since these days by stupid poll-parrots who, from all sides around, flew down upon these baits and with them carried away the well-being of the world, true freedom of the individual, formerly so well guarded against the pressure of the mob.

The would-be wise men of the GOYIM, the intellectuals, could not make anything out of the uttered words in their abstractedness; did not see that in nature there is no equality, cannot be freedom: that Nature herself has established inequality of minds, of characters, and capacities, just as immutably as she has established subordination to her laws: never stopped to think that the mob is a blind thing, that upstarts elected from among it to bear rule are, in regard to the political, the same blind men as the mob itself, that the adept, though he be a fool, can yet rule, whereas the non-adept, even if he were a genius, understands nothing in the political - to all those things the GOYIM paid no regard.

Yet all the time it was based upon these things that dynastic rule rested: the father passed on to the son a knowledge of the course of political affairs in such wise that none should know it but members of the dynasty and none could betray it to the governed.

As time went on, the meaning of the dynastic transference of the true position of affairs in the political was lost, and this aided the success of our cause.

26. In all corners of the earth the words "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity," brought to our ranks, thanks to our blind agents, whole legions who bore our banners with enthusiasm.

And all the time these words were canker-worms at work boring into the well-being of the GOYIM, putting an end everywhere to peace, quiet, solidarity and destroying all the foundations of the GOYA States.

As you will see later, this helped us to our triumph: it gave us the possibility, among other things, of getting into our hands the master card - the destruction of the privileges, or in other words of the very existence of the aristocracy of the GOYIM, that class which was the only defense peoples and countries had against us.

On the ruins of the eternal and genealogical aristocracy of the GOYIM we have set up the aristocracy of our educated class headed by the aristocracy of money.

The qualifications for this aristocracy we have established in wealth, which is dependent upon us, and in knowledge, for which our learned elders provide the motive force.

27. Our triumph has been rendered easier by the fact that in our relations with the men, whom we wanted, we have always worked upon the most sensitive chords of the human mind, upon the cash account, upon the cupidity, upon the insatiability for material needs of man; and each one of these human weaknesses, taken alone, is sufficient to paralyze initiative, for it hands over the will of men to the disposition of him who has bought their activities.

28. The abstraction of freedom has enabled us to persuade the mob in all countries that their government is nothing but the steward of the people who are the owners of the country, and that the steward may be replaced like a worn-out glove.

29. It is this possibility of replacing the representatives of the people which has placed at our disposal, and, as it were, given us the power of appointment.

Drawback in Islamist radicalization: Lebanon, Iran, Pakistan. And the Palestinians?

Until several weeks ago this author had a very pessimistic evaluation of strategic developments in the Middle East and Central Asia.

Hezbollah was on its way to take control of Lebanon through legislative elections; in Iran president Ahmadinejad was on the point to win a second term in power; in Pakistan, the local Taliban was moving towards the capital Islamabad after a disgraceful deal with the Zardari government.

But things changed abruptly: the Hezbollah lost the elections in Lebanon; Iran is witnessing a pre-revolutionary situation and the Pakistani army is fighting the Pakistani Taliban.

Paradoxically, these sweeping changes are, partly at least, the result of semi-democratic elections in the three countries.

In Lebanon the Christian voters, who under an archaic sectarian electoral system are the balance between the Shia and Sunni voters, finally understood the danger of Hezbollah taking control of the country and leading it to a Iranian style theocratic regime: they refused to vote for Gen. Michel Aoun's pro-Hezbollah candidates.

In Iran, where the Council of Guardians decides who can run for the presidential and legislative elections, the reformist leaders with the support of much of the Iranian people, firmly contest the results of the election, the supreme spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei and the "elected" president Ahmedinajad. The next weeks will tell if the Iranian people and the reformist elite will be able to change from within the sclerotic religious regime.

In Pakistan, the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in December 2007 led to the ouster of the authoritarian Gen. Pervez Musharraf and the formation of an elected but weak government. The Pakistani originated November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India and the advance of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) troops towards the capital Islamabad in spring 2009 finally brought about a decisive move by the Pakistani Army against the Islamist strongholds in FATA and SWAT, and possibly Waziristan.

But make no mistake: Hezbollah is still the biggest organized political movement in Lebanon, with a militia armed to the teeth by Iran and Syria and a potential threat to the pro-Western March 14 forces and to Israel's northern border; for Mir Hossein Musavi and his reformist camp the nuclear project is also a national priority; among his staunches supporters is Ali Akbar Mohtashami Pur, who supervised Hezbollah's creation during the bloodiest attacks against US and Western targets in Lebanon and the Gulf during the 1980s, secretary-general of 'The international conference in support of Al-Quds and Palestine" and a Holocaust denier on his own.

Nevertheless, these last events are the first major drawback in what seemed until lately a winning march of the Islamist radical states and movements in the region.

It is surprising this has not happened yet in Gaza, where the Palestinian population voted in 2006 Hamas hoping for a better life and security, but received instead bloody fratricide fighting against the Fatah militants, Israeli closure, collapse of the economy and finally the devastating Cast Lead operation by the Israeli Army.

The Palestinians should have already learned since 1993 that the support of Iran, Syria and Hezbollah to Hamas terrorism and violence is not the solution for their hardships and a successful peace process.

A change in the mood and behavior of the Palestinians, on the example of the Lebanese and Iranian peoples, could convince the disillusioned Israeli people to support more courageous moves by their government toward peace.

History repeats itself -- at great cost to our nation

Supporters of army action claim that this was the only option left but this is never a viable option in such circumstances. As for the writ of the state, it is ironic that today the same people who decried using military force to exert the writ of the state are now cheering this impending debacle by the state. For instance a Lahore-based English daily (owned by the present Punjab governor) in an editorial on August 29, 2006, in the aftermath of the Bugti killing titled "Musharraf's misplaced concreteness about 'writ of the state' concluded that "if an effort to establish the writ of the state actually leads to more chaos, then surely there is something wrong with the approach behind it." Ambassador Haqqani's article in another Lahore-based English daily, on August 30, 2006, titled "Violence against Politics" made the same point on use of military force against one's own people. An earlier editorial (August 29, 2006) in the same paper wisely declared that "the writ of the state is best established by winning consent, not ramming it down people's throats by force." How quickly the US makes some of us change our perspectives! On August 28 2006 Musharraf had also given his justification for military action in Kohlu in terms of "the writ of the state".

In fact, so many of us were also focused on the "writ of the state" issue in the case of the Lal Masjid issue with demonstrations and articles; although some of us (including this scribe) did point out to Musharraf and the cabinet in early February at a JCSC meeting that timely action through normal law enforcement was needed to prevent a snowballing effect if the issue was allowed to fester. In the end, the early support for strong action dissipated in the face of revelations of the brutal way the military ended the operation. But most significant was the fallout especially in areas like Swat, but also within society at large. So public opinion alters as it receives more information but by then the damage has been done to civil-military relations. This was a sobering learning experience for many of us, but the state has not imbibed any lessons from this incident either, especially the turnaround the media did in the immediate aftermath.

Now the same history is being repeated and stories are already coming out about how the military did not give enough time for people to leave; how civilians are being killed indiscriminately (The News', 11 May, of the young girl whose whole family fell victim to an army mortar shell) and how no arrangements exist for taking people out of the military operations areas. More such stories will follow and eventually the tide support for the operation will fade away and disgruntlement will set in because the problem has simply been relocated not resolved by this military action.

We are told there were no other options. There are always other options. For instance why could the ANP or federal government not have used paramilitary forces to arrest the leaders of the "militants", charge them and try them in the anti-terror courts? Or, actually physically isolate these militants even if the army had to be involved in this action? At least it would not have resulted in the full-scale military action. But then that did not suit US interests since the Americans know the only way to get to Pakistan's nukes is to destroy the institution of the military.

The issue has been further compounded by the government not developing a national consensus through an APC before commencing the action – but doing it under US diktat just as President Zardari signed the dangerous US designed MoU on transit trade simply to save his seat – or so he seems to have perceived. As for PM Gilani's words, "finish them off" – they could have come from a military dictator. You do not "finish off" your own people, even criminals. There are terror courts and laws and due process – that is what distinguishes a state from non-state actors. The writ of the government actually is already over if the army is sent in and that is what has happened once again in our dark political history. Already the external vultures like the US are eyeing our nuclear assets as every province is being deliberately destabilised from within and a disinterested ruling elite either willy nilly or by design gives in to the negative US blueprint for Pakistan.

British religious scholars and leaders belonging to Markazi Ahle Sunnat Jamiat while rejecting the harsh Taliban brand of Sharia have announced their support to the ongoing military operation in Swat and other adjoining areas of Malakand.
Speaking at a news conference in Walthamstow, East London, last night, Pir Mazhar Hussein Gilani, Prof. Nisar Baig, Barrister Munib Qadri and others said the kind of Islam being preached by Taliban was unacceptable.

They said Islam advocate peace, harmony and brotherhood and abhors violence such as beheadings, assassination of ulemas, burning of educational institutions and preventing women from getting education.

The religious scholars said the behaviour of the Taliban in Swat has tarnished the image of Islam and that of Muslim community living in foreign lands.

They called for unity in the ranks of the Muslim community to foil the nefarious designs of Taliban and the enemies of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, a leading PPP activist Amanullah Khan in a statement has endorsed the operations to eliminate Taliban from Malakand. He paid tributes to the Pakistan Army for rendering sacrifices in the elimination of the Taliban threat.

He called on the Government to leave no stone unturned in bringing peace and tranquillity to the affected areas so that the people uprooted by the military actions are able to return to their homes as quickly as possible and resume their normal lives.

Peshawar rocked by another bomb in P.C. Hotel

At least 80 people were injured and 5 were killed in a powerful explosion in five star Pearl Continental Hotel (PC) on Khyber Road here on Monday, police said. A woman was also injured in the powerful explosion. The sound of blast was heard in long distance. The windowspanes of the nearby building were smashed into peace. The power supply in the area has been suspended. The injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital for treatment. Emergency has been imposed in Lady Reading Hospital. Minister Mr Bilor said that all Taliban are terrorists and we will not stop until we have got rid all of them. it is sad to see that the blast took place near the house of the IG, Core commander and almost in a 4km radius there are lots of dignitaries living. it is clearly a lack of seriousness on the part of the government.

PAKISTAN FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL

Dozens of followers of Pakistan's top Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud were in a compound targeted by a USA missile strike that killed 27 near the Afghan border, intelligence officials said, on Saturday 02/14/2009, while insurgents freed a kidnapped Chinese engineer elsewhere in the northwest region.

The missile strike Saturday appeared to be the deadliest yet by the American UAV drone aircraft that prowl the FATA frontier region. It defied Pakistani warnings that the tactic is fueling extremism in the nuclear-armed Islamic nation.

The release of the Chinese man held by the Taliban since August was a rare bit of good news in Pakistan following the apparent beheading of a kidnapped Polish engineer, Piotr Stanczak, and threats to kill an abducted American UN official. The exact terms of his Saturday release were not immediately clear, but a Chinese official said he was doing well.

In an unrelated interview, President Asif Ali Zardari said the Taliban had expanded their presence to a "huge amount" of Pakistan and were even eyeing a takeover of the state.

"We're fighting for the survival of Pakistan. We're not fighting for the survival of anybody else," Zardari said, according to a transcript of his remarks that CBS television said it would air Sunday 02/15/2009 (see - Risk Of Collapse).

Many Pakistanis believe the country is fighting Islamist militants, who have enjoyed state support in the past, only at Washington's behest.

Remotely piloted U.S. aircraft are believed to have launched more than 30 attacks over the past year, and American officials say Al Qaeda's leadership and ability to support the insurgency in Afghanistan has been significantly weakened. But Pakistani officials say the vast majority of the victims are civilians (see - 5-Catastrophs).

After Saturday's strike, Taliban fighters surrounded the flattened compound in the village of Shrawangai Nazarkhel and carried away the dead and wounded in several vehicles. The village is in South Waziristan, part of the tribally governed area along the Afghan frontier considered the likely redoubt of Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden.

The victims included about 15 ethnic Uzbek militants from Uzbekistan and several Afghans, said Pakistani intelligence officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. The seniority of the militants was unclear.

Pakistan's former government and the CIA have named Baitullah Mehsud as the prime suspect behind the December 2007 Bhutto assassination (see - Michael-Hayden). Pakistani officials accuse him of harboring foreign fighters, including Central Asians linked to Al Qaeda, and of training suicide bombers.

The new U.S. administration has brushed off Pakistani criticism that the missile strikes fuel extremist and anti-American sentiment and undercuts the government's own counterinsurgency strategy.

As overall security has deteriorated in Pakistan, foreigners have become prime targets. In recent months, Chinese, American, Iranian, Afghan and Polish citizens have been victims of abductions and killings.

I.S.I – PAKISTANI ARMY INTELLIGENCE

Since Pakistan became an independent State in 1947 it has a bitter conflict with India about Kashmir that a part of it is under Indian rule. That ongoing conflict led to several wars and to a constant guerilla war against the Indian in Kashmir. That Guerilla was always supported and conducted partially by the Pakistani Army Intelligence - I.S.I. (Inter-Services Intelligence )

The Soviet invasion to Afghanistan in 1979 led to a very close cooperation between the CIA, who directed the efforts against the Russian, and I.S.I. Without Pakistan and I.S.I the Americans could not function in Afghanistan. Together CIA and I.S.I established a world wide network to recruit, train, supply and shift thousands of Muslims volunteers from all over the world to Afghanistan.

After Russian left Afghanistan in 1989 USA and CIA abandoned their interest in the area and the infrastructure was left to be used by I.S.I .

I.S.I, quite naturally, wanted to exploit and carry on the Muslim enthusiasm and the network of recruiting young Muslim to Afghanistan for their war in Kashmir. The Taliban and the training camps in Afghanistan became the back yard of I.S.I to recruit and train in warfare thousands of Muslims for the conflict in Kashmir. Some hundreds of them found their way to the Western World. Pakistan was the only country in the world that recognized the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. All the leaders of the Taliban and Al Qaeda had regular relations with I.S.I. Most of the Muslim terrorists all over the world passed through Pakistan for training in Afghanistan or for briefing in Pakistan.

Most of the senior Al Qeada operatives were captured in Pakistan after The 9/11, some of them in safe houses belonging to I.S.I. Notorious terrorists that committed atrocities in India or hijacked Indian Flight 814 flight on 12/25/1999, in order to free other terrorists in Indian Jail, lived freely and openly in Pakistan.

After The 9/11 The Indian Intelligence provided hard evidence that with the help of Pakistani Military Intelligence (I.S.I) chief Lt' Gen' Mahmud Ahmad and Omar Saeed Sheikh, a most notorious Islamic terrorist, wired 100.000$ to Mohamed Atta some time before June 2000.

There is no doubt that I.S.I helped USA to capture some of the most dangerous operatives of Al-Qaeda but, at the same time, helped others, like Osama Bin Laden or Ayman Al Zawahiri to escape. Today (03/2007) I.S.I has a very complicated set of understandings with the tribes on the Afghanistan border that enable them to give refuge to senior Taliban and Al-Qaeda members as long as they don’t act against Pakistan and its regime or embarrass the country’s foreign relations.

Looking at the major arrests in Pakistan of Al Qaeda operatives in the last three years, since 2004, there is a clear impression that Pakistan and I.S.I are willing to capture and extradite to USA mainly foreigners but are still protecting local leaders of Taliban and Al Qaeda or senior leaders that enjoy large public support among the tribes in the remote area of North West Pakistan.

It is hard to diminish the negative role of the Pakistani Military Intelligence - I.S.I - in enabling the Global Jihad and setting up its infrastructure.
